Re-Gassing & Replacing Struts
Unfortunately, we no longer offer mobile re-gassing services for private vehicles; please contact us to make an appointment for fitting at our workshop or send the strut directly to us.
Gas struts use highly pressurised nitrogen gas to do their lifting. Think of them like car tyres — with require regular re-inflating they will last longer.
Using specialist equipment, we can usually re-gas struts to their original pressure, returning them to as-new performance without needing replacement. Due to natural leakage, we recommend that struts should generally be re-gassed every 4-5 years.
However, there are some instances where struts cannot be re-gassed:
- – All the gas has leaked out (does not rebound)
- – Oil is leaking from the seal
- – The rod is damaged or painted
- – The tube has excessive rust
- – The end fitting threads are damaged
- – Some brands cannot be regassed
Ordering a new strut
To build a new strut, we need to know its:
- – Dimensions (see drawing)
- – Gas pressure (measured in N, kg or lb)
- – Fittings on both ends
For those with an existing strut, its part number and gas pressure should be shown on the tube. If this information is missing, please send a photo to the Gas Strut Services team and we may contact you for further details. In some cases we will need the strut sent to our Auckland workshop for assessment.
If a strut’s pressure cannot be established, we will use a trial-and-error approach, where pressure is added incrementally until the strut performs correctly.
